About Dendera Temple

The Temple of Hathor at Dendera is located about 30 miles north of present day Luxor, ancient Thebes. Built in the Greco-Roman era (30 B.C. -14 A.D.), the temple was sited on the Nile's west bank and aligned with the star Merak in Ursa Major. The temple is distinguished by its Hathoric columns, the four-sided capitals of which depict carved faces of the goddess. Hathor is the only god or goddess in the Egyptian pantheon to have been depicted with a full face view. The temple is perhaps most well known for its unique round zodiac or planisphere, the original of which resides in the Louvre. The temple's sanitorium or healing center served as pilgrimage destination.
